It felt good to vote
11/3/2010 - Michele Moore
Yesterday I actually felt good when I voted. It had little or nothing to do with those for whom I voted and everything to do with the simple fact that I could and did vote. This may all sound very new-agey, but there was a sense of being connected to my fellow citizens, and to the multiplied millions of Americans who came before me. In that moment we had a shared experience. I believe I honored the privilege that countless other have fought and died to defend. The privilege of giving voice to my citizenship by casting a vote. Like a special look between intimate friends or a secret handshake that lets other kids know we are all part of the same club, those of us who went to the polls and registered at our local precinct and voted, demonstrated the fact that we all belong as members of this society. I love this country. I cry when its anthem is played. I stand and place my hand over my heart every time I have an opportunity to pledge my allegiance to the flag that represents us all. I am thankful to have been born here and thankful that I am a citizen of the United States of America. For all her flaws...and there are many...she is still my country.
