Living for the weekend
9/23/2010 - Michele Moore

I hate admitting that I live for the weekend, though my guess is that most Americans do the very same thing. I can't help thinking how wasteful it is. So many minutes, hours, and days are endured just to get to the precious two days that follow Friday.

My husband and I have talked at length about our current state of frustration with our professional lives, and have determined that we need to focus on the myriad things for which we can be grateful. We will continue to do what we know to do to change our lives for the better, but it will take some time. Meanwhile, we are doing our best to maintain an attitude of gratitude.

When I hear about others who have created the lives they longed for...Janet Glaser and her vagabond experiences in their camper comes to mind...it gives me hope. One step at a time, I am moving forward toward the life I was meant to live. No doubt I will share each and every step with all of you! Until then...tomorrow's Friday, and I couldn't be more ready.

Perhaps a person looks forward to the weekends more when they have a partner. While I was single for a time I preferred my working days as the loneliness at the weekends enhanced my separation and the pain was worse. So I guess we view the weekends each according to our situation. But you are right, it's a waste to regret any time we have when it all goes so fast.

Thank you, Celia. I had never thought of it from that perspective before. But I'm sure you're right. Were I alone and the majority of meaningful contact with others happened at work, I probably wouldn't relish the weekends. However, if I was alone, I wonder if I'd have the guts to chuck it all and live where I want and try a new line of work. I can't do that now without dumping my best friend, and I'd rather not do that. Hmm...no easy answers on this one...
