The World Health Organization (WHO) recently stated that cancer was responsible for several deaths every year as over 12 million cancer cases were diagnosed every year.
It kills more people than AIDS, malaria, and TB combined. But with this data also came a good news that two out of five cancer cases could be prevented.
The WHO is supporting the International Union Against Cancer to prevent cancer on the World Cancer Day that takes place every year on February 4. The theme for 2010 is ‘Cancer Can Be Prevented Too’.
According to experts 40 percent of cancers could be dealt with by making certain lifestyle changes.
Officials at the International Union Against Cancer stated that cancer could be prevented if people checked their smoking, limited their alcohol consumption, avoid too much sun, and balance their weight through diet and exercise.
Another effective method suggested was getting vaccines, like those against cervical cancer.
Gerry McElwee of the UCF said, "Research shows that around two thirds of all cancers could be prevented if we stop smoking, avoid sunburn, eat a varied diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, maintain a healthy weight and lead an active lifestyle."
