The Apron
2/21/2011 - Susan Terbay

Below is an email that was forwarded to me from one of my dearest friends and I just thought it is definitely worth a read and a stirring of memories.  It was for me and I hope it is for you.....

The History of the Apron

I don't think our kids know what an apron is.
The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was also because it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and aprons used less material.  But along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven.

It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears.

When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids..

And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms.   Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove.

From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.

After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls.   In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees.

When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds.

It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes.

REMEMBER:
Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool.  Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron.

I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron - but love...

What you have written is so true. I see a lady, selling aprons at the market, but sadly she doesn't sell many. I still wear one when I'm cooking. Does anyone else?

I grew up on a farm; my mom, my aunts, we girls and my grandma wore aprons made from feed sacks. Good memories here, Susan. And Celia, I make aprons as a decorator accent for kitchens and patios. I made a patchwork bakers apron from my old Levis for my son and a smaller version (adding lots of bling) for my granddaughter. I love aprons, I still wear them.

Count me in on the apron wearing brigade - not sure about using one to clean ears though! Mine is made of denim and it is sturdier than most - serves to keep whatever spills or splatters off my clothes. And - I don't wear "good" clothes while I am at home unless we have company, but I still wear an apron???? Does anyone else change into their comfy stuff? I know that comes from my mother always telling me to take off my school clothes and put on my play clothes! I still do!!!!!!!!!!!!

I shared this email with many women - and all responded with 'thank you for the memories.' I can still see my grandmother's flowered apron and I also remember her wiping off counters and tables with it. Her pockets held treasures. I have two aprons hanging in my kitchen - wearing an apron when I get 'carried away' - whenever I put it on - I think of my grandmother and my mother and what a wonderful way of connecting.

The only comment I can add has already been said. Thank you for the memories.
