I agree, Susan. They both held their own - and did so very well. I was most impressed with Joe for his ability to stay calm, focused and not make any gaffs. Sarah was more well rehearsed than she had been with Katie Couric. Shame. Not much fodder for Tina Fey and SNL there.
Good for them both. They made their parties proud.
If I were to pick a "winner" , however, it would be Biden - he came across much more polished, knowlegeable and ready to be second in command.
And good for Gwen Ifill - she was spot on with her questions and her demeaner in moderating the debate.

And we have a new format for debates. As Sarah put it to the moderator "You ask your questions and I'll answer my own."

I have to also point this out - after the debate she was holding the baby and then passes the baby onto a 'child' to hold and walk around and down steps within a crowd of unknown people. What mother would allow a six year old to hold a baby under such conditions? I'm sorry I had six children and never would I have given the baby to a child that age to carry even in the house! Just had to mention this - found it disturbing along with some other comments she made but then I'll just comment from that of a mother and let it go at that.

Not to mention the only thing she found 'wrong' with Cheney was the shooting accident - please tell me she can't believe this especially with a son going to war - she is sooooooo not of this world.

Talk of wind-up dolls and bad mothering? Hmm.. I was hoping for more from our site members than mean-spirited comment. What have we become when resort to name-calling? Palin is a lightning rod, crucified in the media. Can't we have a reasonable debate without that same rancor? It would appear not.

I wasn't name calling, I was observing as a mother of six children that never would I have given my baby to a six year old to carry with steps around strangers with so much distraction that the baby could have seriously been injured as well as the child herself. . I didn't call her a 'bad' mother - but that kind of action disturbs me. I thought I was being kind by not mentioning the obvious. If she is the lightening rod - that is of her doing and I really don't want to put her in the same category as Jesus as being crucified - He preached peace and non-violence - not Sarah!

Susan.. I believe it's fair for us to disagree with other mothers and the choices they make. I didn't find her actions at the debate offensive at all and I'm a mother of five.. grandmother of three. The media and unkind comments all around are what have turned her into a lightning rod. I am a Christian woman and in no way put Christ and Palin on the same level. However, I think you know that's not what I meant. She and her family have been lambasted, unfairly criticized, torn apart.. choose whichever term you like. But please do not mistake my remarks for something they are not.

We have the right to disagree and that takes nothing away from my respect for you. I disagree with her on many things especially regarding the wars, and her complete lack of knowledge of foreign affairs, her demeaning remarks of labeling average Americans as Joe six packs and hockey moms. I don't want a candidate as VP who does not see the evil and the damage the present VP has done to this country. If we fail to learn from our past we are doomed to live it again and I don't want to live these past 8 years again.

No offense, Susan, but how are you going to think if Obama wins this election and then your son is sent to Afghanistan? To think that an Obama victory would mean peace is a little pie in the sky, which is what really bothers me about some of the remarks of Obama supporters. If Obama would be able to do even half of what he's promising then we'd better getting the distinction of sainthood ready for him.

No offense taken - Jimmy has been in Afghanistan and Iraq and he knew before he was officially released this week that he would be going back in the spring - so I knew that already. We are at war. And frankly when we were attacked I understood the need to go to Afghanistan, not Iraq and I protested openly, in the news and on tv the stupidity of going to Iraq. Afghanistan was and has been where that enemy who attacked us has existed-but no Bush had his agenda and lied to Americans. At least Obama gives me hope - McCain has sold his soul to the politics of Rove and that saddens me..

Your son was released this week? What does that mean exactly? He's on home soil? And already he knows he's being deployed again in the spring? I'm kinda confused.

my "doll" comment takes on a new meaning if Rich Lowry Of national Review is any example.
A very wise TV executive once told me that the key to TV is projecting through the screen. It's one of the keys to the success of, say, a Bill O'Reilly, who comes through the screen and grabs you by the throat. Palin too projects through the screen like crazy. I'm sure I'm not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, "Hey, I think she just winked at me." And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can't be learned; it's either something you have or you don't, and man, she's got it.

I'm sorry J - I thought you knew - I thought I shared on this site the trauma our family went through when my grandchildren were missing with their mother who ran off with a man she met on-line. After 30 days of unknown we were able to trick her through other people and she brought the children to my home. This was going on while Jim was in Afghanistan. He got a lawyer and fought to get sole custody of his children - which he did. In so doing he became eligible for a hardship release. However, the military was not eager to give it to him but his commander fought for him. continued....

hints at what' they're holding onto when she's allowed to show herself.

So he has received his papers that he can now come home and be with his children. He is legally separated from his wife. While he truly wanted to remain in the military - he could not convince them to just let him remain state-side - no, he had to be ready to be sent to war again. He was scheduled to go back with his unit in the spring - he knew that when his tour was up this summer. He had a 6 month time away and then back again for 15 months. I could write a book about the damage this war has done to our soldiers and their families. This is just a tip of the iceberg. continued...

In conclusion to all of this - my son is the kind of soldier you want in the military but this administration has abused and used our soldiers to the point that they are not treated with respect they deserve. through my military contacts I had a letter hand delivered to the Gov. of Ohio plus my last blog - A Different Crisis - was sent to him as well by them. I want to work to help our soldiers and their families get the mental health care they deserve and not have it held against them by the military. There is so much people don't know - or don't want to know and I won't remain silent.

And again my observation about how she treats her baby is an observation and how it affects me. Also - I heard Rich's comment as well - yuk!

Saturday Night Live debate skit was a hoot. The sad part is - it is so close to reality. As far as a sex symbol - my son - the soldier coming home - considers here 'hot'!! He will certainly be sat down by his sisters and his mother and be deprogrammed!

Ths advance speculation of either side is just that...speculation. We cannot say that Obama would solve eveything or even anything. And we cannot say whether McCain would make us safe or less safe. We will all be connected to other events that are beyond our control. Why can't we stop speaking in absolutes and speak in hopes and commit ourselves to make them happen. This sounds like a blog.
