Only White Men are Safe in the Streets
3/22/2012 - Suzanne Caplan
The recent killing of the 17 year old child in Florida led me to learn more about how young black males are taught how to act so that they will not be attacked by people who are suspicious of them. That is so sad and I can imagine how it makes them feel.
And to think how the mothers of these young boys worry when they are out too long and they begin to imagine the worst. I have seen the bonding between black mothers over this thought as well as the connection between the fathers. This violence needs to come to light to all of us.
And it mad my think about how vulnerable ALL women feel from time to time when they are out alone. How I will not walk across a parking lot after dark and I ask friends to watch me get to my front door when they drop me off. These days, it is more about purse snatching than an attack but these concerns have always been somewhere in my mind. I served on the Board of a rape crisis center, so perhaps that explains it.
But white males do not have this burden. I am not saying that they should or that it is their fault that these circumstances exist. But it does make their lives different and they do not even realize it. Safety is very important, it is the basis of confidence.

My heart goes out to the mothers of these boys who have to worry just because the boy is black. I think, however, if a white boy is in a neighborhood where he is different, he may find himself in a tense situation also. Anytime someone is different, there is suspicion.

One of my adopted sons is Black. Living in Florida and Georgia were the most reactive to his color. He was taught to stop and not talk.I picked him and 2 other black football players up from practice at the high school to have a sheriff stop me, gun pulled and said " they " had been in a rumble across the street a white lady reported. I pointed out they had been at practice. I was shaking and they were silent. The Sheriff asked if my husband was Black! I told him my son was adopted. He snickered and kept us and 20 behind me detained for his pleasure.Heart wrenching and one example.

Predator’s line up behind the least protected of any society. Yes, you have pointed a finger in the right direction. Elitism will not see a problem until it sits on their doorstep. Then the more likely solution is to throw money at it rather than absolve the aching heart of a hand-me-down kid.
